Greenquist Invitational 2011 Recap

Alliance Taekwondo had a strong showing this weekend at the 2011 Greenquist Invitational.  Underbelt competitors Caleb, Logan and Tanner Olson, as well as Kelsie and Ashton Madche, took home twelve trophies in thirteen divisions, including two firsts, seven seconds, two thirds and a fourth.  Three black belt competitors, Alliance instructor Devon Waldron and Alliance alumni Charles Smith and Kyle Sanford, took home seven trophies in nine divisions, including one first, two seconds, three thirds and a fourth.

In forms (patterns), our underbelts took home four fourths and a third, all in separate divisions.  Our black belts took second and fourth, with an additional third in weapons patterns.

In breaking, our underbelts took home one first, one third and one fourth, again all in separate divisions.  Our blackbelts took first in the standard black belt division and second and third in the advanced black belt division.

In sparring, our underbelts were on fire, with brothers Caleb and Logan taking first and second in their division, and siblings Kelsie and Ashton each finishing second in their respective divisions.   Two of our three black belts fought for the men’s title; Mr. Kyle Sanford was eliminated by the fighter who would go on to claim first place.  Mr. Charles Smith came away with a third place finish, owning a win in the bronze match after a hotly contested bout in the previous bracket – which came down to a single point in overtime – denied him a chance to fight for first.

Ranking underbelt Caleb Olson took the prize in a pushup contest, beating out the next highest scoring competitor by a very comfortable margin.

In addition, Mr. Devon Waldron also took home the prestigious Jay Halvorson Memorial Trophy for cleaving seven boards with a single knifehand strike.

Alliance would like to congratulate the team on their victories, and thank the parents and instructors who have supported them.  As always, our gratitude goes out to Grandmaster Eric Greenquist for his many years of dedication and instruction, and Great Grandmaster Moo Young Yun for his tireless efforts in the promotion of Korean martial arts.
